Dave Nelson, Ph.D., has worked in public schools for over 20 years. In addition to teaching science for 15 years in Calvert County, Maryland, Dave also worked as an assessment development specialist for science, ELA, and math content areas there before joining Performance Matters in 2014. Dave comes from a district that has used Performance Matters since its founding, and he began developing assessments within Unify when the platform came to market in 2014.

In developing assessments, Dave has worked directly with curriculum and instruction leaders and their teachers to support the development of effective and efficient assessments that inform teaching and learning. Dave has extensive experience in deconstructing standards into learning targets, building assessments and their blueprints, and guiding the development of items and assessments using qualitative and quantitative methods.

Dave earned a Master’s degree in biochemistry from The University of Maryland College Park and completed his Ph.D. with an emphasis in measurement and assessment at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He lives just outside of Washington, D.C. in Alexandria, Virginia and continues to teach courses in statistics and assessment at George Mason University.
